That’s not a flaw in the tools; it’s a vocabulary collision. “Forensic” simply means “related to legal proceedings,” and three professions claim it:
- Digital forensics (DFIR). Cellebrite describes itself as a digital forensics and intelligence platform for accessing, extracting, and managing digital evidence, serving examiners, investigators, prosecutors, and public-safety agencies. Belkasoft positions its software for acquiring, examining, and analyzing evidence from mobile devices, computers, cloud, drones, and cars, serving law enforcement and enterprise organizations. Both are established platforms doing exactly what they say — and what they say is device and data investigation. They serve the investigator working a case, not the evaluator writing an expert opinion.
- Forensic accounting. A separate family of AI tools analyzes financial records, transactions, and disclosures for fraud examination and financial disputes. Again: a real category, a different buyer.
- Forensic mental health. The category for forensic psychologists, psychiatrists, and neuropsychologists whose work product is an evaluation prepared for court — competency, custody, criminal responsibility, risk assessment, personal injury. The AI platforms here handle protected health information, operate under HIPAA, and support either writing the report or reviewing it before it is signed and challenged.

A three-question test for which category a tool belongs to
When a vendor page says “forensic AI,” three questions sort it immediately:
- What artifact does it ingest? Phone images, disk images, and network logs mean digital forensics. Ledgers and transaction records mean forensic accounting. Evaluation reports, test data, and clinical records mean forensic mental health.
- Who is the professional in the loop? A certified examiner or investigator points to DFIR; a CPA or fraud examiner points to accounting; a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist rendering an expert opinion points to the mental-health category.
- What standard governs the output? Chain of custody and forensic soundness govern digital evidence. Accounting and audit standards govern financial work. Expert admissibility — Daubert, Frye, and their state variants — plus HIPAA governs a forensic evaluation.
If a platform can’t answer “evaluation reports, a licensed evaluator, and expert admissibility” to those three questions, it may be excellent software — for a different profession.
What a forensic evaluator actually needs from an AI platform.

- No model training on your data. As of July 2026, consumer ChatGPT uses conversations for model training by default unless the user opts out; consumer Claude trains only if the user allows it. A platform handling evaluations should run inference through a commercial path that is contractually excluded from training — and be able to show you where that exclusion is written.
- Citation verification with linked opinions. Courts have sanctioned filings over AI-fabricated citations since Mata v. Avianca (S.D.N.Y. 2023), and in Kohls v. Ellison (D. Minn. 2025) a court excluded an expert declaration over AI-generated citations to nonexistent articles. Any case law an AI platform surfaces must be checked against public court databases, labeled with its verification status, and linked to the actual opinion so you can read it yourself.
- Jurisdiction and admissibility calibration. Whether your report faces Daubert, Frye, or a state hybrid changes what a methodology review should look for. A platform built for forensic work should calibrate to the venue, not apply one generic standard everywhere.
- An audit trail. HIPAA expects access logging, and cross-examination increasingly asks how AI was used in the preparation of a report. A platform should be able to document who accessed what and when.
